Why I Became A Financial Advisor
By Jess Peterson
There are many reasons you probably chose your career. Maybe it was the excitement of future opportunities, the salary, or the flexibility. For me, my reason was simple: I wanted a career where I could work with my family and have a significant impact on people’s lives while using my skills to communicate and teach a complex topic. We all know that money, and how you handle it, can make or break your life. It is the most stressful and anxiety-inducing thing in a given person’s life. I became a financial advisor so that by helping people with their money, I am helping them with that anxiety and stress, and hopefully making their life easier and more enjoyable.
My Career Journey
Nevada has always been very important to me. I’m proud of where I was born and raised. Honestly, it never occurred to me to leave for college or when I finished with college. Keeping that in mind, I got to work, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from the University of Nevada, Reno. Shortly after, I joined my father, D. Scott Peterson, at Peterson Wealth Management and started building experience and expertise. Now, more than 12 years later, I am an investment advisor representative and I spend my days helping people improve their lives. When most people think of financial planning, they think of retirement. And yes, that is a vital piece of the puzzle. But more than that, I get to walk with people through the many financial milestones and decisions they face throughout their lives, such as helping them buy their first new car or home or helping them build up a savings account before they have a child. Thoroughly planning for all these things boosts my clients’ confidence and allows them to live their life without financial stress. I am passionate about not only developing strategies that allow my clients to build wealth, but also educating them so they can make choices that get them closer to their goals.
The Best Part
Hands down, the best part about my job is the people I serve. My clients become my friends, and I look forward to each and every time I get to connect with them. There’s just nothing like getting the opportunity to reduce their anxiety and hear the relief in their voices when they realize they are on the right track. My motivation lies in doing right by my clients. They trust me to steward their money wisely, and I don’t take that privilege lightly. I think that is why our firm is against account minimums or any obstacle that may preclude a person from reaching out to me. Money is tough for people; don’t make it harder for them to get the answers they need. And most importantly, never judge a person by how much they do or don’t have before they even walk through your door.
